The landscape of metro Atlanta’s suburbs is shifting, and if the latest power play in Alpharetta is any indication, the future of the Northside might just involve a sheet of ice and a professional hockey team.
Jamestown, the heavy-hitting real estate firm famous for transforming an old Sears warehouse into the cultural magnet known as Ponce City Market, is officially entering the race to bring the NHL back to Georgia. This time, the focus isn't on Midtown or the BeltLine, but on the aging North Point Mall.
Reimagining the Suburban Mall
The vision is as ambitious as it is transformative. Rather than simply tweaking the existing shopping center, Jamestown is partnering with the city of Alpharetta and the mall’s current owners, New York Life, to pitch a massive, arena-centric redevelopment.
The goal? To turn 100 acres of prime real estate off Georgia 400 into a premier entertainment destination. While the centerpiece would be a state-of-the-art hockey arena, the plan extends far beyond game nights. The proposal outlines a dense, walkable urban district featuring:
High-end multifamily housing
A new wave of curated retail and dining
Modern office spaces and boutique hotels
Integrated public transit connections
The Team Behind the Vision
Jamestown isn’t going it alone. They’ve brought in the Machete Group, a specialized advisory firm with a resume that reads like a "who’s who" of world-class sports architecture. Having worked on venues for the NBA, NFL, and international soccer leagues, Machete Group provides the technical expertise needed to design a facility that meets the rigorous standards of the NHL.
A Tale of Two Tunnels
Alpharetta’s bid isn't the only one on the table. Just six miles north, Forsyth County is pushing its own $3 billion "Gathering at South Forsyth" project. While both sites are vying for the same prize—the region’s third attempt at a pro hockey franchise—Alpharetta proponents argue their site has a competitive edge: existing infrastructure.
With established roads and a commercial corridor already built to handle high volume, the North Point site is essentially "plug-and-play" compared to more rural alternatives.
Why Now?
The timing coincides with a renewed interest in suburban "live-work-play" environments. As North Point Mall has struggled with the same decline facing many traditional shopping centers across the country, a sports-anchored redevelopment offers a path to revitalization.
By creating a "city within a city," Alpharetta is looking to move past the era of the traditional mall and toward a future where entertainment, residence, and commerce collide.
What’s Next?
While the NHL has not yet officially committed to an expansion schedule, the momentum in North Fulton is undeniable. For residents, this project represents more than just the hope of seeing a puck drop—it’s a chance to see one of the area’s most iconic properties reborn as a vibrant, 24/7 destination.
Whether the "third time's a charm" for Atlanta hockey remains to be seen, but with the developer of Ponce City Market at the helm, the North Point site is certainly dressing for the big leagues.
